Craniosacral Therapy for Babes
What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy [CST] is an incredibly gentle, hands on therapy that can help with a variety of common conditions. The goal of craniosacral therapy is to release tension in the soft tissues that surround our central nervous system [your brain & spinal cord].
By using light pressure [the weight of a nickel!] along the head, neck, spine, and pelvis, we can support the proper flow of cerebral spinal fluid which is responsible for nourishing our central nervous system. Ultimately, we aim to support the growth and development of your baby’s nervous system with this gentle technique.
How can CST help your baby?
Craniosacral therapy can look ‘like magic’ on newborns and infants. When we are able to relax tension and tightness in baby’s body, we are left with a calmer, happier little one! Below is a list of the MOST common conditions we treat with craniosacral therapy. This list is not extensive, contact us to see if craniosacral could benefit your babe!
Common Conditions for Newborns & Infants
Colic
Plagiocephaly [flat spot]
Torticollis
Nursing/Feeding Issues [including tongue & lip ties]
Reflux [including silent reflux]
Constipation & Gas
Motor coordination
Sleep disturbances
In the first year of life, your baby’s brain will double in size. Craniosacral therapy is one way to nurture this incredible growth!
Connection Between Fascia and CST
Fascia is connective tissue, almost like a tough plastic wrap, that surrounds all our soft tissues and organs. Fascia provides support, by holding structures ‘in place’ but it also provides a smooth surface for different muscle layers to glide over each other. Because fascia layers are continuous, restriction or fascia tension in one area can lead to issues in another area.
The body’s craniosacral system is intricately connected to the body’s fascia. We can use craniosacral therapy to reduce the tension in baby’s fascia. Ultimately, the result is a more relaxed baby, with less stiffness and movement restrictions.
