Epsom Salt vs. Magnesium Flakes
What’s the Difference Between Epsom Salts and Magnesium Flakes?
The difference between Epsom salt and Magnesium Flakes is simple. They contain different types of magnesium. Epsom salt contains magnesium sulfide while magnesium flakes contain magnesium chloride. Here are the key differences between these two types of magnesium:
Magnesium chloride is better absorbed [and it has higher elemental magnesium compared to magnesium sulfide]
Magnesium chloride is typically sourced from sea water
Magnesium sulfide is typically man made
Magnesium chloride contains trace minerals
Epsom salt baths can be dehydrating, whereas magnesium chloride baths are more hydrating.
Magnesium sulfide is traditionally MUCH cheaper
Ultimately, magnesium chloride is better absorbed by the body and is viewed as the ‘better choice’. However, epsom salt is traditionally more affordable, and the magnesium sulfide is still absorbed and can provide benefits.

We recommend trying epsom salt baths first. Dissolve at least 2 cups of epsom salt into a warm bath and soak for 15 to 20 minutes.
